HWIN - Ontario's New Electronic Registration and Manifest System and Regulation

Effective January 1, 2002, all generators are required to register their hazardous wastes annually rather than the current one-time only requirement. In addition, hazardous waste generators will be required to pay for the costs of managing hazardous and liquid industrial waste in the province.

Included as part of this initiative is the implementation of a new electronic hazardous waste information network (or HWIN), the first of its kind in North America. It will provide better service to generators and immediate up-to-date information on the generation, movement and disposal of hazardous waste. On-line registration of hazardous waste generators is scheduled to begin on January 2, 2002, and be completed by mid February, 2002. On-line manifesting and tracking through HWIN is scheduled to begin on February 26.
