Atlantic Packaging Ltd. is a paper recycling company. The company provides paper fibre biosolids from its process to Courtice Auto Wreckers Ltd. to produce a material called Sound-Sorb. Sound-Sorb is produced by mixing the paper fibre waste with mineral soil. Sound-Sorb is currently being used to construct sound and bullet attenuation berms at gun clubs in Ontario.
In response to public concerns about this material, the ministry is conducting a comprehensive study of the material. Test results available for the paper fibre biosolids and Sound-Sorb are presented and discussed in technical reports available on this website. Work currently in progress includes groundwater monitoring and an assessment of risks to human health and the environment posed by Sound-Sorb. The results of this work will be posted on this website when complete. To date, the Ministry of the Environment's review has not found any evidence that there is an adverse environmental impact from using Sound-Sorb in berms. The following documents are components of that review.
