Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste Program

The Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) program was approved on February 19, 2008 commenced on July 1, 2008.

The primary purpose of the program is to divert hazardous household wastes from landfills or sewers. These wastes can be harmful to public health and the environment if not managed properly.

The program is funded by industry and was developed by Waste Diversion Ontario (WDO) in cooperation with Stewardship Ontario, the industry funding organization.

The program includes the following hazardous household wastes:

  • Paints
  • Solvents
  • Single use batteries
  • Oil filters and containers
  • Antifreeze
  • Pressurized containers such as propane cylinders
  • Fertilizers and pesticides.
