CROWN CORK & SEAL CANADA INC. CHARGED
WITH ODOUR-RELATED OFFENCES

RICHMOND HILL — Crown Cork & Seal Canada Inc. has been charged with three counts under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) relating to operations at its plant at 7900 Keele Street in the City of Vaughan.

Crown Cork & Seal Canada Inc. produces aerosol cans and metal bottle caps that are coated with inks, waxes and varnishes of various types.

The company faces one charge under section 9(7) of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), related to an allegation that, between December 1997 to August 9, 2002, Crown Cork & Seal Canada Inc. installed and operated equipment without a certificate of approval from the Ministry of the Environment.

The company faces one charge under section 14(1) of the EPA, involving an allegation that, between March 5 and March 7, 2001, odours were emitted from the plant.

The company also faces one charge of emitting – on April 26, 2001 – xylene at levels exceeding the standard set out in section 5(3) of Regulation 346, made under the EPA.

The first court appearance is scheduled for April 14, 2003 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Richmond Hill.
