IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT PROCESS

The government is proposing changes to the EA process that will make it easier to navigate, result in faster decisions, save time and money, and protect the environment.

The chart below shows the complaints received about the current system and how the government is making it better.

Complaints About The Current System How We’re Making It Better
  • Lack of direction on the requirements and content of EAs
  • Lack of knowledge among proponents delays outcomes
  • Costly for both proponents and opponents
  • Takes too long to receive a decision on approvals
  • Duplicates planning requirements of other provincial planning processes
  • Many opportunities to appeal Minister’s decisions on such things as bump-ups and elevation requests
  • EA slows development of minor projects with little or no environmental impacts
  • Clear, consistent standards and principles so that EAs are complete and correct
  • Improve education and outreach to eliminate confusion and false starts
  • Save money by removing duplicative planning work and improving guidance to reduce delays
  • Time savings through improved guidance, reduction in duplicative work and improved government approvals timelines
  • Consolidate activities such as consultation for multiple approvals processes
  • Reduce opportunities for appeals by delegating decisions on bump-ups and elevation requests
  • Ensure appropriate types of projects are subject to EA
