| RE: | Improvements to the Environmental Assessment Process |
On June 6, I announced that the ministry is proposing a significant set of changes to the environmental assessment process that will protect the environment, be more efficient, provide clear rules to practitioners, and save proponents time and money. Sector-specific improvements will also be made to support transit, energy and waste projects moving through the EA process.
The attached document provides an overview of the path forward. The ministry intends to consult with EA practitioners, environmental and community groups, and the public before finalizing our improvements. I encourage you to comment on our proposed improvements as we bring them forward over the next few weeks and months.
I want to express my gratitude to the EA Advisory Panel including the three sector tables (energy, waste and transit) for their recommendations on ways to improve the process. In addition, the ministry heard from a number of people who submitted responses to the panel’s report. The report and comments received form the basis of our plan.
I look forward to continuing our dialogue on EA improvements.
Yours truly,

Laurel Broten
Minister of the Environment
