Integrated Environmental Planning Division is responsible for integrating the overall policy development and planning functions of the Ministry. This involves integrating and synthesizing all information, data and perspectives on the many aspects of the Ministry's mandate. The division consults extensively on developing policies, strategies and programs that support the Ministry's core business of conservation and environmental protection. The division is organized along functional areas which include: Waste Management Policy, Land Use Policy and Water Policy Branches, as well as the Air Policy and Climate Change Branch.

The Waste Management Policy Branch is responsible for the development of policies, regulations and legislation to ensure sound and effective management of wastes in Ontario. The branch works with municipalities, the private sector and associations to develop effective policies and programs for the management of both hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, and promotes waste minimization, diversion and recycling activities.

The Land Use Policy Branch provides guidance and assistance towards the achievement of sound environmental protection and conservation practices by the province, municipalities and external clients. The branch achieves this by developing and updating land use policies and programs, and by promoting integrated and innovative approaches to foster the protection of human health and ecosystems. The branch fosters information sharing, and feedback on emerging environmental issues and trends on land use management and planning issues.

The Water Policy Branch is responsible for the development of policies and programs to protect and restore the quality and quantity of Ontario's water resources. The branch works with other jurisdictions, municipal, federal, other provincial and international interests to develop effective policies and programs for the protection and wise management of ground water, surface water and drinking water, and promotes water efficiency for ecological, environmental and social and economic sustainability.

The Air Policy and Climate Change Branch is responsible for the development of policies and programs for the improvement and protection of Ontario's air quality. The branch takes the lead on developing policy regarding smog issues, acid rain, inhalable and respirable particulates and ozone-depleting substances, and leads in the development of Ontario's position on climate change and other activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Strategic Policy Branch provides the central strategic policy function for the ministry, including central cabinet liaison responsibilities. The branch's role is to provide integrated strategic policy capacity by forecasting the longer range strategic direction for the ministry. The branch looks at long range ministry issues and concepts to inform the development of sound public policy, and effectively integrates ministry policy development from among the core functional areas (air, climate change, waste, water and land) to ensure consistency with the government's priorities.
