Sector Compliance Branch: Inspections

Auto Wreckers

Background

The auto wrecking sector's processes can have a significant impact on human health and the environment. Some issues that may be found at auto wrecking facilities include the ground being contaminated with oils or grease due to the transfer and processing of waste; stormwater runoff transferring contaminants into streams or groundwater; and the improper handling of refrigerants that may contribute to ozone depletion.

The Inspections

During the the inspection sweep, the Sector Compliance Branch inspectors:

  • ensured the company was complying with its certificate of approval,
  • inspected air emission sources such as waste burning area and welding stations,
  • inspected the handling and disposal of wastes generated onsite,
  • inspected the handling and disposal of refrigerants.

Inspection Results

The inspectors found that 97% of the facilities were in non-compliance. Some common issues of non-compliance include:

  • no waste disposal site certificate of approval,
  • no stormwater management certificate of approval,
  • failure to register as a waste generator,
  • no certificate of approval for air emissions.
