Sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from INCO Ltd. and Falconbridge Ltd. in Sudbury are presently regulated under orders originally issued by the Ministry of the Environment in 1978, and then revised in 1983. Under these current orders, the companies are limited to a maximum hourly ground level concentration average of 0.5 parts per million (ppm) of SO2.
The Ministry of the Environment is proposing to issue new orders to both INCO Ltd. and Falconbridge Ltd. that will lower the maximum hourly ground level concentration average to 0.34 ppm of SO2 and reduce the total annual emissions by 34%
A public information centre will be set up at the Palladium Ballroom South of the Ramada Inn City Centre Sudbury on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, from noon to 9:00 p.m. to answer questions relating to this proposal. For more information, the Sudbury District Office of the Ministry of the Environment can be contacted at (705) 564-3237.
